    The Magic Of Webcammery!

A lovely centered picture of the computer room
    Friends,

Over the weekend, I replaced the old webcam server with a not nearly as old webcam server and the results so far have been better than I'd hoped. The new server is more responsive, has more storage, and should be able to stay up and running more consistently. Plus, it's a nice way to keep technology up and running and useful that some Cupertino-based computer companies have deemed obsolete.

During the transition, I temporarily lost one of the primary cameras, but I added a new one that's taking great pictures. Now you can see what the neighbors are up to during most of the day and some of the night.

    That's not creepy, is it?

The Photons Are Bouncing Off Of Things In The Atmosphere In A Pleasing Manner

a lovely centered picture of a stunning sunrise in sorta-hdr

    Friends,

Some days you just want to press on through your commute as fast as you can. Year in and year out you look at the same landscape. You change the channel on the radio to mix it up. Have another sip of coffee to stay alert.

Today, on the eve of a minor precipitation event (which would be a grandiose way to hype the promise of some rainfall this afternoon) I found the sunrise so spectacular, that I had to share. My iPhone's High Dynamic Range (HDR) setting only begins to capture the depth of the colors on display, but it wasn't too far off.

We'll see what today's sunset offers. Maybe another reason to stop.

    Great Minds

    TWA lounge photo from Shorpy!

    Friends,

Here's a photo of the TWA lounge at Idlewild Airport taken sometime in 1964. Looks sort of like the departure lounge at the Idyllwild International Airport, without the pine tongue and groove panelling, of course.

    And the squirrels scampering around.

Gladiolus? Better Than That, We're Tickled Pink!

    Friends,

It's time to clean out the card on the camera for the weekend, and I thought you might like to see pictures of flowers and a grinning puppy dog. The mild weather has done wonders for the late Summer bulbs and having the place to herself again is doing wonders for the girly dog's disposition.

The pictures are pretty good, but I'll try to get more words out very soon.

America's space shuttle program ended today with the successful landing of Atlantis. Times are tough in this country right now, but this really drove it home.

Storm Watch 2011! - Motor Racing Edition

    Snowy ridgeline. Friends,

I was supposed to head to the desert early this morning to see the vintage auto racing at the new Chuckawalla Valley Raceway in Desert Center. Unfortunately, something happened overnight...

Fun game: find the teensy little car! A foot and a half of snow fell on my little town and buried the cars. This wouldn't be too tough to deal with except the local government hadn't yet plowed the road, so I called off the trip.

Taken after the plows arrived. With the ice and snow on the ground and the new brakes I installed only yesterday, I wasn't sure that traveling off the hill was a good idea.

Chilly forest time. Was watching the Daytona 500 on teevee a good substitute? Not at all.

Sticky. But the neighborhood is very pretty today.

    Your pal,

    bob

    Sunday In The Park

    Four-low might be a good idea.Friends,

Governor Moonbeam II has released his first/next budget for this here golden state and he has laid down some painful cuts extending over the next few years. Here in America's Very Finest (and cleanest!) Forest, we've lived with a lack of services for quite a long time, so this is really nothing new to us. This is the street in front of my friend's house and her neighbors, who live there full time, managed to get somebody in a truck with a plow to run down the middle of the street once a week ago. Not the county, just some guy.

    And now it's all ice.

She'll not be driving down there into the Fern Valley holler anytime soon.

The fog! It's coming! I continued into town and took a shot of the fire station. Oh look, some fog...

Then I turned around and shot the other way.

It's here! The fog is here!

Visibility could be slightly diminished! Good gravy! Noooo!

Important Notes for Monday, 20th December

    Friends,

It's been raining pretty steadily here since last Friday (or as I like to call last Friday, The Great and Terrible Head Cold Epoch) with rainfall totals breaking records all over Southern California. On my way to work this morning, tumbling off of the hill as I am wont, I had to stop and try to get a shot of the view. you may not be able to see exactly what's going on here, but it's a top-down shot of storm clouds hovering over the Coachella Valley at around 5:30 AM.

The camera did warn me that I was shaking it too much...

Happy Hallowe'en - Part II, The Parading

    Friends,

There isn't really any conventional door to door trick-or-treating here in my little town. The houses are too far apart and it gets really dark (and spooky!) once you're out of the range of either of the two street lights. Hence, the Idyllwild Hallowe'en Parade (or Harvest Parade or Pumpkin Festival Parade or something like that) and the turnout this year was the largest I can remember so here are a lot more pictures than I can remember ever posting. Enjoy!

    Idyllwild Hallowe'en Parade 2010 Idyllwild Hallowe'en Parade 2010

It's nice to see the families get out.

    Idyllwild Hallowe'en Parade 2010

    And the Roma people.

    Idyllwild Hallowe'en Parade 2010

And the hoards in a queue, but what are they waiting for?

    Idyllwild Hallowe'en Parade 2010

Oh just for Steve at Idyllwild Heating to pour buckets of candy over their heads. Yeah, no kidding.

    Idyllwild Hallowe'en Parade 2010

Hey Gingerbread Man, bring buckets of candy and we'll talk.

    Idyllwild Hallowe'en Parade 2010

Most of the businesses down North Circle Drive had buckets of treats to share.

    Idyllwild Hallowe'en Parade 2010

It's good business, because it helps you earn a good reputation with the nicer people in town.

    Idyllwild Hallowe'en Parade 2010

But why wasn't anybody lining up for cider? Because it was two bucks a cup, perhaps.

    Idyllwild Hallowe'en Parade 2010

Maybe some people were waiting for something a little stronger.

    Idyllwild Hallowe'en Parade 2010

Here's the best shot of the throngs I could manage. There had to be hundreds of people there.

    Idyllwild Hallowe'en Parade 2010

    And jellyfish.

    Idyllwild Hallowe'en Parade 2010

And dogs dressed up like squirrels.

    Idyllwild Hallowe'en Parade 2010

And a guy who dressed up as Elvis, but may have been a little distracted—by himself.

    Idyllwild Hallowe'en Parade 2010

The people who were chose a theme were fun. I see what they're doing here.

    Idyllwild Hallowe'en Parade 2010

But I don't get this. Any help?

    Idyllwild Hallowe'en Parade 2010

Maybe I should've asked these guys.

    Idyllwild Hallowe'en Parade 2010

I showed this picture to our own Idyllwild Weather Clam who was confused and wondered what the shark was supposed to be.

Claudius and Helena brought their daughter Moonbeam. Always good to see the local time travelers getting out and about.

    Hard To Know

    They're here!

    Friends,

I was tipped to the story by the good folks at Metafilter that retired Air Force officer Stan Fulham has written a book predicting that a fleet of alien spaceships will be breezing by Earth today as some sort of first contact. The 13th? Really Stanley? You clearly didn't consider the dimensional rift that cuts through my little town right in the middle of the parking lot outside the Village Market. Yesterday.

    They're here.

    Lucky

    Friends,

Some societies consider visitation by giant beetles to be a good omen (which ones? -ed Just go with me on this.). Sure, it was odd to find this minor monster hanging off the screen door a couple days ago... Giant bug. ...but maybe it was a sign. After all, the family was scheduled to stop by my place the next weekend. I wasn't sure if I'd have time to prep the house, fix the broken toilet, clean up the leftover bits of dog. What I needed was another sign. Something that might, I don't know, convince me that this wouldn't be a complete disaster. That's quite a lot. Right! All that was left was for the kiddos to arrive... kewt! ...and maybe line up on the staircase for a picture... Kiddos! ...or even collapse the swing together... Smash. Even through my barbequed berry pancakes, minor meltdowns and a whole lot of mosquito bites, we even managed to get together for a great big family photo. You don't see that every day. Totally worth it.

I'm pretty lucky, don't you think?

Facialtome Diaries: Today's Young Youth Edition

What do we want? Our beautiful lives handed to us on a platter! When do we want it? C'mon, really? Friends,

Remember when you were a college freshman? When you had stars in your eyes? When you were going to take the world by the horns unconcerned about getting gored? Sometimes I see that people on the Facebook need some help, especially in my area of expertise. One of those people is my Facebook friend who is the daughter of my friends who has embarked on taking herself way too seriously at a liberal arts college back East.

Eventually the reality of this world will surely catch up to her and deal her the soul-crushing blow it dealt the rest of us. In the meanwhile, this exchange happened today...

Liberal Arts College Freshman: Does anyone have an old school Polaroid camera that they would love to give me? If so, I will be forever and eternally grateful.
Friend Of Freshman: ebay has some nice one for under 5 bucks. Mine was .99 cents
Your Humble Author: You can have my Polaroid 800, but this might make more sense. Just download Polardroid on your Mac and use it to modify your digital photos for totally blown-out, over-saturated pics...
    http://www.poladroid.net/

    Liberal Arts College Freshman:
    1) I don't have a Mac. I don't really think Mac is an ethical company so I try not to buy from them.
    2) I don't have a digital camera because I don't personally think digital photography is the best artist art form when it comes to photos.
    3) I want a Polaroid camera because they are history and after that scare awhile back when they said they were going to stop making Polaroid film, I decided to invest.
    Thanks for the suggestion though!

Apple isn't an ethical company. Not as ethical as, say, Microsoft or HP. There's that. But digital photography isn't an art form compared to a Polaroid?

Ah, youth. You kids are so screwed.

    Daring Photography!

    Friends,

Can photography be dangerous? Like when you're taking a shot over the windshield header at speed?

Yeah, it's Indian Wells in the morning. You can tell by the bollards. Yes, especially when the ambient temperature is relatively low and your fingertips experience a little chill.

    Slaving for my craft,

    Toddler Birthday Happy Photo Blort!

You'll never believe this, but a pig pops out of the haystack! Friends,

I trundled down the hill to attend my nephew (and godson, btw) William's first birthday. The birthday boy was pretty happy about the whole thing, even if the cake decorators may have been phoning it in...

I'll bet they'd be upset if you misplaced the decimal point on the check. ...but the party favors were laid out with care...

Is this the gifting suite? Even the birthday boy's sister was in fine form...

I enjoy a good hat now and again. ...right up until the bubbles I brought ran out.

    The end. Happy birthday, William!

Idyllwild Photo Blort - Winter 2010 Edition

The Village Hardware people aren't calling for their promo shot.
    Friends,

Hey, lookee here. I took some shots last Sunday before the latest snowfall and forgot to get them off the camera. It's a quiet time in my little burg, early in the morning before the shops open and people wipe the syrup and pancake crumbs off the corners of their mouths and get out in it.

Oooh. Strawberry Creek Plaza in the morning. So delightful.
The automatic locks at the post office clicked open and let me in to get my mail, but the market was still closed. Only minutes remaining to buy beans and tomato sauce for Super Bowl chili. Plenty of time for another shot...

    See those clouds? Snow's coming...
The cloud layer has changed, foretelling the snowfall later in the day. Maybe. Or they're moving in the wrong direction.

Much prettier than a drive to Hemet, at any rate. Just saying.

Storm Watch 2010! Photo Blort! Edition!

    The Forest: In color.
    Friends,

You may have heard that we had a little storm up here in the gateway to America's Cleanest Forest (more on that later). A modest amount of snow fell...

Hmm, somebody likes pictures of trees...
And now that I have a set of snow shoes, I don't get a lot of frozen, wet intrusion in the top of my boots. That makes getting nice shots much easier...

    No sledding.
I found that this was important to get quick snaps before the next storm rolled in...

That tree's gonna come down, isn't it?
What better plan than to work from home last Friday? The roads weren't plowed regularly, but when they were, the ice sheet was exposed. Forget it, I thought. Time to light a fire and use my bandwidth instead of the failed network at the Festival of Dirt.

    Cozy.
My DSL stayed up at this Secret Alpine Laboratory, but the genius monopolies of AT&T and Verizon combined to allow the big pipe at work to fail. Oh, and they decided to take the weekend off and got around to working on the problem today. Towards the end of the day, the connection came up but they didn't tell us. "Just figure it out yourselves. By the way, we really value you as a customer."

    Of course they do.

    Esteemed, Beloved, Updated

I dunno, she seems a little dubious of Uncle Bob. There can't possibly be a reason...
    Friends,

As promised, but very late, here are a couple nifty shots of tiny brand new baby Esme (no accent acute? -ed No, sorry. I've been corrected. That's too pretentious.). I haven't heard an update, but I'm guessing that she's now forty pounds and four feet tall. Maybe more!

I'm gonna get into trouble posting my sister's picture. She's very shy.
I'm going to go edit Wikipedia right now because there's the new definition of cute. You're welcome, internet!

    What's This Murky Gunk?

    Friends,

I haven't found any answers to the question of the murky haze layer covering Southern California. The first two pictures aren't of my latest chest x-rays, as you might expect, but document my camera's struggle to deal with the low-light landscape this morning...

These two were taken a little later in Garner Valley. The fingers of gunk seem to be wrapping around the neck of the Coachella Valley, ready to squeeze the life out of the Festival of Dirt. Happy Friday!

Bigger versions are available with a click. Gianter versions are available on request.

Feel free to speculate on the nature of the bad air quality. Real or imagined answers are welcome.
